The supposed “Golden Ratio”

The supposed “Golden Ratio”

Of course, there are aesthetic ideals that we as humans follow. The Golden Ratio for the face is one example of this. In today’s world, advances in human medicine have made it possible to adapt virtually any physical characteristic in line with your own preferences. But is it really sensible to do so? If you cannot find the right balance between preserving and optimising the specific characteristic, you run the risk of losing your identity. Meanwhile, radical change can alter your appearance so drastically that it can have a heavy long-term bearing on how you are perceived by family members, friends and colleagues.

During the course of their life, specific phases of development and the ageing process, almost everyone comes across physical attributes with which they are not satisfied and which they think about changing. These “weak points” may have been present since birth, or they can be the physical results of pregnancy, weight loss, surgery or an accident. This feeling is perfectly normal and understandable – our feelings of self-worth and the aura that we give out are both directly linked to how happy we are with our bodies.

A special responsibility

Plastic surgeons carry a particularly great responsibility. As the first port of call when a patient wants to change their body for cosmetic reasons – a desire that may have been present their entire lives – the consultation plays a very important role.

Plastic surgeons can find it difficult to balance honest, understanding advice and the “right” recommendations with having the courage to not automatically agree to every treatment requested (especially in the case of medical or cosmetic concerns). After all, plastic surgeons are not just doctors, but also service providers.
