Male breast abnormalities are a taboo subject. Many people are familiar with the condition, but hardly anyone speaks openly about it. Men suffering from the condition often avoid swimming pools and saunas, and don’t wear tight clothing. It often affects relationships too, as they can feel shame being naked. The good news: these men are not alone. We can help.
Many men suffer from the symptoms of gynaecomastia, but don’t realise that their symptoms are the result of a medical condition. The condition is often observed as a result of two different components: an increase in benign fatty deposits in the breast area and enlarged mammary glands. Caution: In rare cases, changes to the breast area could be caused by a tumour. As a result, and as with every medical treatment, we recommend that the cause of the condition be properly investigated before any surgery is discussed. It is essential that the patient undergo an endocrinological examination as well as a general examination and examination by a plastic surgeon, in order to rule out a hormonal imbalance or a tumour.
If it becomes apparent that there is a medical reason behind the gynaecomastia, we can help you to apply to have the costs of the operation paid for by your health insurance company, and will accompany you to make sure you are in good medical hands, as we are not able to issue the certificate ourselves.

Plastic surgeons differentiate between open and closed interventions. If the operation is intended to remove an increase in fatty tissue below the breast muscles, a closed procedure like the minimally invasive liposuction is generally sufficient. The required incisions into the breast tissue are generally barely visible once the body has healed.
However, if the glandular breast tissue has expanded, a combined procedure of closed liposuction and open removal of the glandular breast tissue will be required. A small incision is made below the areola through which the excess glandular breast tissue is then removed.
In extreme cases, it may be necessary to carry out a second subsequent operation to tighten the breast envelope. For this, the incision is also made near the areola and the scar is barely visible.
You need to wear compression clothing for 6 weeks post-op. The tissue that has been operated on is at its most inflamed after around 12 days. After this the fibres begin to retract. You can expect to see the final results after around 4-6 months. We are here to support you closely after the operation and will help you to ensure that the results of the operation can be retained over the long term.

An endocrinological examination, including an ultrasound examination of the testicles and chest, is essential. In addition, the patient’s hormonal balance needs to be checked. An underlying illness causing the gynaecomastia must be ruled out prior to the surgery taking place. A plastic surgeon can only treat the gynaecomastia when underlying hormonal imbalances and tumours have been ruled out.
Yes, the results usually last a lifetime. Once the excess breast tissue has been removed, it usually does not come back. However, in the case of minimally invasive liposuction in the chest area, new fat deposits may form as a result of an unhealthy lifestyle.
Some drugs can actually cause gynaecomastia. These include ACE inhibitors, antidepressants and anabolic steroids.
Gynaecomastia cannot be treated through exercise or diet. If the gynaecomastia is caused by a hormonal imbalance, certain medication can help to reduce the symptoms. In all other cases, closed and open surgical procedures are the only way of achieving good results over the long term.
If the cause is deemed to be relating to an illness, health insurance will cover the cost after application and approval. We can help you with your application.
